Action camera flashlight and its interesting features

Things to keep in mind when purchasing a flashlight

Some factors are considered when buying an action camera flashlight. Some of the factors include Light output, Battery Run time, Size and Weight, etc. These flashlights start from $20 and range up to $200. There are even studio-type lights available for an action camera. It mostly preferred to buy a new action camera not a refurbished one or used one. This is because their battery and light intensity weaken over time. There are some flashlights which have plastic covers on them to make them waterproof. However, these plastic covers experience haze over time. Then comes a point when the plastic cover becomes opaque.

Light Intensity of the light

Action camera flashlights are usually pocketable in size. This done so they can easily fit on the action camera itself. Action cameras themselves mostly pocket-sized. The light intensity measured in lumens. This is a measure of the intensity of the light coming out of the bulb. Light output can range from 20 lumens to nowhere up to 3500 lumens. However, action camera usually tend to have an output of 800 lumens. This magnitude of lumens is similar to that of a car’s headlight. However, these small flashlights usually tend to produce a focused light ray. This means their light rays are enough to light up a whole room.

Distance Travelled by Light

Most action camera flashlights produce a focused light ray. Hence, they are prone to travel more distance than normal lights. The distance traveled by light is also termed Beam Distance. This distance measured in meters. The distance is how far the light will shine until its brightness starts weakening. As the brightness weakens the light then soon disappears as well. The beam distance is usually proportional to the light’s intensity. It also depends upon the lens used to focus the light. Most manufacturers make use of a convex lens to focus light. This is because these lenses are mostly round and have a fisheye design. The fisheye designs help to focus the surrounding light as well into a single beam.

Power Consumption of the flashlight

The power consumption of the light is also commonly termed runtime. Run Time mostly measured in hours. However, action camera flashlights are mostly dependent on the battery of the action camera itself. However, some of these flashlights also have a sole battery to facilitate the bulbs. Run time is the measure of how long the light runs until it stops producing light rays. Run time mostly claimed for different light settings. This done as there is a different run time for mediocre light brightness and a different run time for maximum light brightness. Some manufacturers also provide a runtime graph. This labeled with the intensity of light on the vertical axis and time (in hours) on the horizontal axis. Users can easily produce an idea of how the battery power output reduces with time.

Water Resistance of the flashlight

Being an action camera flashlight, it should be waterproof. This is because most of the latest action cameras are waterproof. This because this camera specifically designed to use in any condition. Whether it be rain, hail, or snow the camera performs its best in every environment possible. Hence, the action camera flashlight should also be made waterproof. They should at least have an IPX8 rating. This rating one of the most top-notch produced until now. It guarantees that the device can withstand up to 4 hours underwater. However, it only be submerged to a specific depth.

Conclusion

Latest action camera flashlights are IPX4 rated. This means that the device is splash-resistant. However, some mediocre-grade flashlights also come with an IPX7 rating. This means that the device can withstand underwater for up to 30 minutes. However, the device should only be submerged up to 1 meter. Still, up till now, there hasn’t been a waterproof flashlight that could be produced. A waterproof rating would be termed IPXX.
